Units
What a unit is in Unitley, how its dollar size is set, and where units and ROI show up in the console and the tools.
A unit is your standard bet size, in dollars. Talking in units lets you compare results without saying how big your bankroll is: +5u means the same thing on a $500 bankroll as on a $50,000 one.
In Unitley, a unit is a way of reading stakes and results. It does not size stakes. The suggested stake comes from Kelly, your risk profile and your limits. See Kelly and stake caps.
How the unit size is set
You set the unit when you set up your bankroll, in one of two modes:
| Mode | What a unit is | Limits |
|---|---|---|
| % of bankroll | A share of your current bankroll. A unit grows and shrinks with your bankroll. | 0.1% to 10% |
| Flat $ | The same dollar amount every bet. | No more than your starting bankroll |
The default is 1% of bankroll. Your current bankroll is your starting bankroll plus the profit on every settled bet. The unit size in dollars is rounded down to the cent.
On a $1,000 starting bankroll at 1%, a unit is $10. After $150 of settled profit the bankroll is $1,150, and a unit is $11.50. After a $150 loss it is $8.50. A flat $25 unit stays $25 either way.
Change the unit any time under Settings → Bankroll or on the Bankroll page. See Bankroll and risk profiles.
Where units show
- Overview. The Bankroll figure shows your unit size and its share of the bankroll. Units won is your settled profit in units over the Overview's week, such as NFL Week 5, compared with the week before. Open picks show each suggested stake in units, with "1u =" and the dollar size beside them.
- Units by bet. The Overview panel shows each settled bet of the week, and of the week before, as units won or lost, day by day.
- Bankroll page. The Unit size figure shows one unit in dollars.
- Bet Log. The log lists stakes and profit in dollars, not units.
Units are shown to one decimal place, such as +5.3u. A loss reads with a minus sign, such as −3.9u.
Which day a bet counts on
For the NFL, the Overview's week is the NFL week: Tuesday to Monday, US Eastern time. Between seasons, and in a week the NFL plays no games, it is the last 7 days: today and the days before it. A bet counts on the day of its game's kickoff. A bet with no game counts on the day it was placed. See Week.
Which unit size is used
Results are converted at today's unit size, not the unit size at the time of the bet. With a percent unit, the same dollar profit reads as fewer units as your bankroll grows. A $150 profit at a $11.50 unit reads +13.0u. At a $10 unit it would read +15.0u.
ROI
ROI, or return on investment, is your settled profit divided by the money you staked on won and lost bets. Pushes and voids give your stake back, so they add no profit and no stake. Open bets don't count until they settle.
ROI = settled profit ÷ stake on won and lost bets$150 of profit on $1,000 staked is an ROI of 0.15, shown as +15.0%. Before you have a won or lost bet, ROI has no value and shows a dash.
ROI shows on the Overview, on the Bankroll page, and in get_bankroll.
In the tools
get_bankroll returns unitSize, one unit in dollars at your current bankroll, along with your unit mode and value, your bankroll and your roi. get_bet_log returns each bet's stake and profit in dollars. To read them in units, divide by unitSize.
Every agent that connects to Unitley is told to give a suggested stake in units. The bankroll-check prompt also asks for your profit or loss in units. See Prompts.
